Deliveroo is urging customers to give a little extra by tipping restaurants this month and will match customers’ tips to restaurants up to the value of €10,000 in January.

In recognition that thousands of restaurants and bars small businesses have been forced, yet again, to close their doors to dine-in customers due to Covid restrictions, and to help ease the pressures of starting a New Year, Deliveroo is pledging to match customers’ in-app tips to local restaurants hit by Covid restrictions.

The pledge applies to all local restaurants on the Deliveroo app that have been required to close completely to dine-in customers according to the most recent restrictions introduced on December 30th. To find a local restaurant eligible restaurants all customers have to do is search ‘tip match’ in the app to bring up a list.

Ahmed Halimeh, Operations Director, at Umi Falafel on Academy Street said:

Restaurants everywhere are experiencing extremely challenging times due to the current restrictions in place. This has come at the beginning of a new year when at Umi Falafel on Academy Street, we were hoping 2021 might bring some respite. Our thoughts are with all of those affected by the pandemic, and for those seeking delicious comfort food at home, we urge people to order from their local restaurants. All of us at Umi Falafel are grateful to our customers for their continued support. We also appreciate Deliveroo encouraging customers to order locally, and for its pledge to match customers’ tips to restaurants up to €10,000. Delivery services are our lifeline at the moment and we hope to continue to bring our customers delicious meals from our menu.

Just before a customer confirms their order at ‘checkout’ on the Deliveroo app or website, they can opt in to add a restaurant tip to their local restaurant, either by selecting from a list of pre-determined values or adding an amount of their choice. The chosen amount for the tip is added to the total cost of a customer’s order and 100% of the tip amount is passed on to the restaurant.

Deliveroo has enabled customers to tip restaurants in the app since July, and since then generous Deliveroo customers have given a total of over €150,000. in tips to restaurants across Ireland.

Paddy Quinlan, Growth Manager IE at Deliveroo said:

The festive season is typically an incredibly busy time for restaurants as they traditionally welcome families and parties through their doors. As we start the new year with restrictions reintroduced for restaurants and pubs on December 30th, these businesses need our support. Tipping in-app is an easy way for customers to show their appreciation for their favorite local restaurant. We want to work with our customers to help ease the pressure on restaurants and show how much they mean to us, especially at this time of year.

Deliveroo will match tips paid to eligible restaurants up to a total value of €10,000 from today until midnight on 7th February 2021 up to €20 per tip.

In addition to Deliveroo’s tip-matching pledge, to further encourage people to support their local restaurants, the food-delivery company has shared four other ways people can support their locals:

Many restaurants are stocking these on Deliveroo, or on their website
  • Buy a cookbook. There’s never been a better time to buy your favourite restaurant’s cookbook so you can get creative in the kitchen at home
