Operation Navigation

Under Operation Navigation, An Garda Síochána continue to enforce Public Health Regulations and find widespread compliance by licenced premises.

From Tuesday 4th August – Sunday 9th August, An Garda Síochána found potential breaches of the health regulations and/or licencing laws on 14 occasions. The majority of these cases continue to refer to no evidence of food being served or consumed.

Since the commencement of Operation Navigation on 3rd July 2020, Gardaí conducting visits to licenced premises have found the vast majority to be acting in compliance with licensing laws and public health regulations. The cumulative national total now stands at 126 incidents recorded as potential breaches.

Files are currently being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions in each of these cases.

Operation Fanacht

At midnight on Friday, 7th August 2020, following the announcement by An Taoiseach of Certain Temporary Restrictions, in County Kildare, County Laois and County Offaly (Health Act 1947 (Section 31A – Temporary Restrictions) (Covid-19) (Relevant Counties) Regulations 2020), An Garda Síochána recommenced Operation ‘Fanacht’, a localised proactive policing operation, focused on supporting public compliance with travel restrictions.

On Saturday, 8th and Sunday, 9th August, there were a total of 374 checkpoints conducted in Kildare, Laois/Offaly and all surrounding Divisions (Meath, Westmeath, Roscommon/Longford, Galway, Tipperary, Kilkenny/Carlow, Wicklow and Wexford). Of these, 172 were in Kildare and Laois/Offaly Divisions, the remaining 202 were conducted in the other surrounding Divisions.

Notes:

The Health Act 1947 (Section 31A-Temporary Restrictions) (COVID-19) (No.3) (Amendment) Regulations 2020 are currently in effect until the 31st August 2020, which set out certain penal provisions. Social distancing and other similar public health guidelines are not penal provisions.

In addition, under liquor licensing laws, a licensed premises requires a declaration of suitability from a member of An Garda Síochána in order for its liquor license to be renewed
